There are many considerations you should look over when deciding on what home business to start up. Yes, these 'Turn Key' businesses are pretty easy to sign up for and have everything included pretty much, but the success of the business rides on you and some other factors

Investment: Does the business require you to invest money and how much? Do you have autoships or need to meet a monthly quota?

Company History: BIG FACTOR! How long has the company been around? Will it survive? Sure, it's great to start with a new company where competition is low and you may be one of the only representatives in your area but you also have to consider that people have not heard of this company or product and may not be as eager to try it out. Plus, newer companies may not last long. The home based business industry is quite large but during the last couple of years and poor economic times, many home businesses closed their doors (some without notice) and consultants found themselves out in the cold. Some consultants invested decades with a company only to have it close it's doors and 'poof', business is gone.

Territory: Are you confined to a territory? Where can you sell and how big is your market?

Sales Mediums: Can you sell online and at trade shows or are you restricted to direct sales and/or parties? Do you have the option of building a team (or is it a requirement) or is the business model flexible to let you succeed without doing so?

There are many things to consider.

Oh, there's tons and tons of them out there. Should you sign on with a pre existing company or should you start something brand new? What kind of markets do you want to tackle and how much time do you have to give (and money?)

Why not? I mean, if a company is successful and doing well, why wouldn't you just sign up and become a distributor or representative? Take Watkins for example, the first home business I started.

Tons of planning and re-vamping. Many tears of frustration cried at times and wondering whether or not to continue. Those days are likely not over either! Yes, my business is doing very well now but nothing is guaranteed in life and you always have to be watching and open to new marketing ideas and markets. Have Plans B-Z already set and ready to implement should you have to find new ways to drive your business! Learn, learn, learn! Mistakes happen, you won't avoid this! Accept it and move forward, learning from everything and get advice whenever you can from other successful (key word successful) businesses!

How to Run a Small Business From Home

Oh, there will be  book on this! It is set to be my third published book actually. (Did I mention I am also an author, freelance writer and website designer?) A blog is certainly not the place to write all this down, there just isn't enough room! But a few quick tips:

• Passion - You better love what you do (then it's not work!) and keep loving it
• Motivation - No one is going to tell you when to work so be able to self-motivate
• Boundaries - No one is going to tell you when to STOP working, so set those boundaries so you don't burn out and  become consumed!
• Knowledge - Know what you are good at and find expert help for areas you are not so strong in
• Honesty - Deal with customers and suppliers honestly and be honest with yourself about expectations
• Patience - It will take time to build a business. 
• Funding - Have enough funding set aside to help you grow the business and still pay the bills. You may have to work for someone else during this time too (I did!) but just remember the end goal!

You can run a small business and even grow it into a big business ( make sure that's part of your long-term planning so you are ready!).  With the economy the way it is, you want to have something to fall back on and having  your own business is a good idea! Just remember it takes time and don't be afraid to ask those who are successful, they are the ones you want to get tips from!

So you've decided - Congratulations! You want to start your own Watkins business but now you need a sponsor. So how do you find a Watkins sponsor? It's quite easy actually - you just did! Find out why you need a sponsor, how to decide on one and how to sign up with Watkins.

What is a Watkins Sponsor and Why Do I Need One?

A Watkins sponsor quite simply is a Watkins associate who is willing to help you and be there for you when you have questions. All Watkins associates can sponsor someone and help them join Watkins but you want to make sure that whoever you choose as your sponsor, he/she is willing to coach you and be there to help you.

Watkins Inc. no longer allows associates to just 'sign up', they do require you have a sponsor first. This is to make sure that you get your questions answered by someone who is willing to be there for you.

What if I only Join Watkins to Get a Discount on My Orders?

One of the great things about Watkins is you can join just to get the discount on your own personal purchases! There are no commitments or quotas to fill so it's very flexible for you. Many associates join Watkins for their own personal purchases, some later on, decide to grow their business, but whatever you decide - Watkins is ok with it!

Even if you join only to get a discount on your orders, Watkins still needs you to have a sponsor. I have many people on my team who only joined to get the personal discount. I don't push anyone on my team to do or sell anything. I offer my assistance and support for those who want it, I share what I've learned over the years on how to grow a successful business with my team members who want to grow either a P/T or F/T business.

How Can a Watkins Sponsor Help me Grow My Business?

Your sponsor should have a good track record and relatively large team that is doing well. This is how you know that he/she is successful themselves and really does help their team members succeed. Your sponsor does not have to be in the same city or even country as you. What is important is that you find someone you like and trust and someone who can help you grow your business.

Many Watkins sponsors will 'say' they can help you and then they just direct you to pre-made information sites and booklets. Check them out - do a Google search on their name and see if they are successful. You want someone who seriously knows how to make it work. Don't be afraid to ask for references either! This is like any other job so find out if your sponsor has references (other team members) who are willing to chat with you and say whether or not they like their sponsor. (Some associates have gotten poor sponsors and ended up quitting because their sponsor did not help them.)

What Kind of Home Businesses Actually Work and How to Start Your Own Business

Want to start your own business but not sure which ones work or how to start them? You are not alone! There are so many businesses out there that you can start and they always say "Be Your Own Boss" and "Work From Home"...blah, blah, blah. But how do you really know what home businesses work and which ones don't?

Finding a Home Business That Actually Works

Sure, we'd all love to make lots of money and have the option of working from home on our own schedule. That is a no-brainer! But there are some REALLY important things to remember when considering starting your own home business:

1. Motivation - Do you have it? Can you motivate yourself and keep yourself going even when times seem low and things look uncertain? Face it, any business, no matter if it's an MLM or something you create from scratch, will have it's ups and downs - be ready for it!
2. Discipline - Being your own boss rocks! (Trust me I know!) But - you have to be disciplined. Yes you can go for lunches with friends/collegues/prospects and yes, you can sleep in (if you don't have kids!) and yes, you can take time out of your day to relax. Heck, you can even plan months of holidays a year - BUT, you have to have discipline to do your job and do what needs doing because there is no one there to kick you in the butt and tell you to get going!
3. Reality - Are you being reasonable with your expectations? I've seen many people who join various home businesses who are so pumped and hyped up about how 'easy' it can be to do the business that they lose sight of the famous saying "If it looks too good to be true, it is!"  Be reasonable with your business expectations. Any home business will take time and work - period! I'm a Watkins team manager and it's taken me 3 years to get where I am now. It wasn't all easy for sure and I still work at it each and every day to keep it growing and expanding. 
4. Investment - Do you have money and time to invest? No matter what home business you are looking at you will need some additional funds to get started. You may need to buy catalogs or other 'start-up' kits so look into that and be honest. You also need some time to commit to working on your business each day. I've seen people who thought they could just 'join up' hundreds of people and live the easy life without working. (See point #3!)
5. History - How successful is this company and it's associates? What do other associates say about the business and how long has it been around? Does it carry products (or services) that are essential or 'want to haves' and does it offer satisfaction guarantees and good customer service? Does it deal with minimum quotas or monthly commitments or require a huge upfront investment? 

Starting Your Home Business

Once you've gone through some of those points above you have to decide what kind of home business to start. Research them and stick with products you like - you can't sell them if you don't like or trust them! Check out the compensation plan and see how likely it is that you can get to the higher levels where you earn more income.

Talk to sponsors and managers and ask questions. You will know from asking questions how trustworthy someone  is and how happy they are with what they do. Find out if there are money-back guarantees and what kind of customer base you can sell to. Find out where you can sell and what training tools are available to you.

Be sure to stick with something you are comfortable with. If you don't like hosting parties, don't do home businesses like Partylite, where most of the sales are all about throwing parties! If you don't want to buy materials every couple of weeks stay away from Avon, as they require updated catalogs often!  Many MLM business models pay the people at the top more so check out the plan and realize how likely it is to make decent money. Some businesses will take time to make steady income, most businesses (even bricks n mortar) don't see big R.O.Is until Year 3, so keep that in mind for measuring.
